특정이미지들이 미디어라는 매체적 특성안에서 강화되는지에 관심을 가지며 북한이라는 소재를 가지고 작업하였다. 2015년에
북한을 소재로 했던 작업들은, 이 전

한 탈북자에게 컴퓨터를 교육하며 개인적인 관계를 맺으며 쌓은 개인적인 기억과 기존에 가졌던 북한의 집단화된 이미지 사이의 간극으로부터시작하게
되었다. 작품의
시각적 이미지들은 주로 인터넷이나 언론과 같은 미디어 매체에서 찾은 북한의 이미지들로 구성되었다. 대표작으로는, 북한의 프로파간다 선전물의 대본이 디지털 자수로 표현되어진 <This is how Americans live today
(2015)>이 있다. 이는 현재 북한에서 그들의 체제유지를 위해 보도되는
내용이며, 북한의 체제와 미국식 자본주의 체제를 비교하며, 미국의 빈곤층의 모습만 프래이밍하여 보여준다. 이는
어떻게 한 국가가 지역적 차이와 정치적 이해관계에 따라서 특정 미디어 매체 안에서 극단적으로 상이한 관점으로 표현될 수 있는지를 보여준다.

With the curiosity of wanting to know how the media can affect people’s mindset, or how the media can simplify and generalize a country or a culture, or how a certain image can be strengthen through the medium of media, I have gained interest in working with North Korea as the subject. All my works about North Korea from 2015 have been influenced by a puzzling experience that I felt while teaching computer and forming a relationship with a North Korean defector in 2014. The visual images of North Korea that compose the artwork were mainly found in the internet and media. A demonstrative example would be <This is How Americans Live Today (2015)>, which is a script from a North Korean propaganda that is digitally embroidered onto a sheet of fabric. The purpose of the propaganda is to maintain their government system and the script contains misleading comparisons of the North Korean system with the American capitalism by framing the impoverished class of America. This artwork shows how a country’s regional distance or political stance can be portrayed extremely different through the influence of the media.
