Smile! (2020)

3d printed headgear displayed on metal frames
a video (2mins 13sec)

‘Smile!’(2020) is a multimedia installation exploring the relationship between personal digital devices and human emotions. Starting from concepts of ‘wearability’ and ‘body enhancement’, the project investigates how personal digital devices extend the concept of the body and come to blur the boundaries between inside and outside.

In this project, two types of headgear that ostensibly train emotions are postulated and designed. The headgear, prototyped in 3D modelling software and produced using 3d printing technology, are displayed on rough, cold metal frames, alongside a digital rendering video in the dimly lit space. The work correlates human emotional state of ‘happiness’ with the physical expression of ‘smiling’, and interrogates how this positive emotion has become something that needs to be enhanced and improved following the logic of capitalism. Furthermore, the artist questions how everyday emotions have become one of the quantifiable virtues for self-management and self-help (self-betterment), in order to increase individuals’ performance and productivity in life.

This project is exhibited in the 2020 Goldsmiths MFA Fine Art degree show.
