Hairstyle is a social symbol. Hairstyle can be a medium to express one's self amidst the current generation's status quo or the societal atmosphere, and it can also be a symbolic indicator to distinguish one's self from a particular group of which some factors may be accepted or denied by one. Archiving the visual materials, the main focus of this project was to show past trend of youth's hairstyles, which depict the authoritative relation that was present in the past generation. In addition, people who were students or teachers, from previous periods, were asked to conduct an interview session.
For the reason of having students to look like "appropriate students," schools have applied authority to each and every one of the students by creating and forcing general rules that included the restriction of hair style and uniform conformity. Due to the irrational regulations that were set by the schools, students strived to find loopholes in the rules to repel the school's repressive power.
There were several ways to rebel against the school authorities. One creative example of a hairstyle incident occurred from 2006 to 2007 in Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province, and it deserves the spotlight. During this time period, every middle school student in Daegu was obligated to cut their hair short with strict regulations such as "3cm below ear" or "5cm below ear." Due to these restrictions, students did not have the freedom to express themselves through their hair, so they invented an alternative hairstyle, called "Lion's Hair", which increased hair volume.
The hairstyle is achieved by making layers to the hair using rolls to increase its volume, and this invention has taken place as a new trend and culture amongst the young people. Creating a hairstyle to resist the repressions from school regulations can symbolize a dissenting message towards the school by the students, but it has also formed another authoritative structure. The hairstyle denotes courage of the students who rebelled against the school, but it also gave birth to a new symbol of power, a visual indicator, among students who rebelled. With intentions to eliminate the vertical organization by rebelling for a horizontal relationship with the school's authorities, students have paradoxically created another vertical hierarchy between the students.

헤어스타일은 사회적인 상징이다. 헤어스타일은 당대의 상황과 분위기를 반영하는 자기 표현의 수단이자 특정 집단 혹은개인에 의해 받아들여지거나 받아들여지지않는 명확한 사회적 지표가 되기도 한다. 이 작업은 한때 유행했던 청년층들의 헤어스타일과 그에 반영된 권력 사이의 상관관계를 탐구하고 관련된 시각자료를 아카이브하여 보여주고, 당시 시대를 살았던 학생과 교사들을 상대로 인터뷰를 진행하였다.
학교는 ‘학생다운 단정함’을 이유로 학생들에게 ‘두발규제’, ‘복장규제’등의 일방적인 규칙을 만들고 부과하므로 학교 권력을 학생 개개인에게 적용시켰다. 청소년들은 불합리한 규율 안에서 허점을 찾아 학교라는 권력에 대해 저항하였다. 저항의 방식은 다양한 양상으로 나타나는데, 한가지 주목할만한 참신하고 흥미로운 방식은 대구, 경북지역에서 2006년 부터 2007년까지 볼수 있던 헤어스타일이었다. 당시 대구지역 중학교에서는 ‘귀밑 3cm’, ‘귀밑 5cm’ 와 같이 엄격한 두발 규정이 적용되고 있었기에 청소년들은 두발표현의 자유를 가질 수 없었고 이에 대한 대안으로서 나온 헤어스타일은 머리의 길이 대신 볼륨을 살리는 ‘사자머리’스타일이었다.
머리의 층을 낸 후, 고데기나 헤어롤등을 이용해서 과한 볼륨을 만들었으며, 이는 곧 청소년들 사이에서 하나의 유행이자 문화로 자리잡게 되었다. 저항으로서의 헤어스타일은 학교라는 권력에 대한 반항의 상징이었지만, 한편으로는 또 다른권력구조를 보여주게 된다. 이는 학생들 사이에서 얼마나 대담하게 학교 규율에 대해 저항하는지를 보여주는 상징적 지표이자 학생들 사이의 권력을 나타내는 시각적 지표이기도 하였다. 학교라는 공간이 만들어낸 수직적 위계질서에 맞서 수평적 관계를 획득하고자 한 저항의 시도는 결국에는 학생 집단간 또 다른 질서를 만들어내는 아이러니를 보여준다.
