Frost of Midsummer / Typing game / approx.9 mins
The phrase "Frost of Midsummer," a script from a daily drama, is a typing practice game that has been divided by word, syntax, and sentence into forming structured stages. Composed of three stages by the drama script, players are instructed to either type the falling words or to type the complete sentence as they fall on the computer screen. This game constrains the player to type in time and by adding checkpoints to accomplish in the same format of existing typing games like when we learned how to type for the first time, which allows the players to increase efficiency and have fun while going through the mundane learning process. In this way, the process of familiarizing comes with the price of typing countlessly and repetition to fully grasp the keyboard. Typing is like other activities such as learning how to ride a bike or learning how to swim, because it does not require the physical conscious to play a role, but instead the repetitive process of the unconscious movement which becomes the result of learning. In this game, portraying a child's language learning process was illustrated by having a child type words or sentences in the following order: word, syntax, and sentence. Housewives being the target audience, scripts in daily dramas are advocating the patriarchy marriage system that involve contents like changing the financial status of an impoverished lady who marries a rich man, or conflicts between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, or a make-belief love story, which are all commonly reflecting the Korean society's ideal Korean female. In order to intensify the illustration of a Korean females complexity in the Korean society, the indirect portrayal in the drama between the jumble of reality and desires of a female, was based on text and re-built as in a typing game format. The first two stages of "Frost of Midsummer" typing game are divided by syntax, so players will not be able to interpret fully other than the nuisance itself. However, on the last stage of the game, players will be asked to type in scripts regarding the suggested ideal women that the Korean society expects, problems between mother and daughter in-laws, or the culturally demanding traditional cliché that appears on Korean daily dramas. Not only are the players asked to create and type these sentences, but they also go through a stage of reconfirmation of what was typed.
